Join the Revolution Espolòn

LOBO was invited to join the Tequila Revolution by David the Agency, who created a rabble-rousing campaign for Espolòn distillery. Taking inspiration from the traditional engravings by José Guadalupe Posada, these two animated pieces bring the amazing Espolòn graphic universe to life in an epic, exciting way, honoring the Mexican revolutionary spirit and master distiller Cirilo Oropeza’s passion and commitment to his craft.The biggest technical challenge of this project was deciding how to animate the rich illustrations from the Espolòn bottle labels, giving them movement and depth using the best of what technology has to offer without drawing away from their handcrafted, gritty style.The “Manifesto” and “Cirilo” spots were made with a combination of 2D and 3D animation, a process carried out by a team of C4D and After Effects artists and 9 frame-by-frame animators.All settings and camerawork were created in 3D, with surfaces receiving a crosshatch textural finish suggestive of 19th century printmaking techniques.The characters were animated in the traditional way, frame-by-frame. During the cleanup process the same etching graphic style was employed as well, helping them blend in naturally with the Posada-inspired environments.
